I'm looking forward to seeing what you can offer in the way of improving my skills. Tony A., LA Calif.
ReplyDeleteIn this class I would like to learn better presentation skills. This way I could "sell" my ideas to clients better.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the longest time that is considered effective for a presentation?
I think what is meant by buying from people we relate to is that When we fell comfortable around people we are more likely to trust them. Just like we are less likely to buy from people we don't trust.
ReplyDeleteAren't a lecturn and a podium pretty much the same thing? Eric N
My main goal is to become more comfortable speaking in front of larger groups of people. Norma R. MN.
ReplyDeleteHow do I stop the long pauses in my speaking without thinking about what to say next? Norma R. MN.
ReplyDeleteI would purchase a product from someone who gives an excellent discription of the product and seemingly knows everything about it. A great speaker listens in order to sell a product.
ReplyDeleteIf I had to use a podium to speak, what would I do with my feet. Norma R. MN.
What I am getting is that to become an instant speaker it is easier if you follow a format that suits your individual style. Be aware of who your audience is and how they will respond to what you present and how you direct what you say to the receivers.
ReplyDeleteWhat would be a proper introduction for a person with a disability who can't hear? Norma R. MN.
ReplyDeleteWhat are some suggestions for becoming less nervous when presenting a speech? When I speak in the public I get very nervous and say um and like a lot, I need some ideas for keeping my cool. Ashley N.
ReplyDeleteI have a problem with saying words like um and like when I am trying to think of what I want to say next in public speaking. What should I do to work on not using these bad filler words??
ReplyDeleteI have a problem when speaking publically of saying um and like a lot as replacement words for when I am thinking of what to say next. What can I do to stop this bad habit??
ReplyDeleteI get really nervous speaking in front of people I don't know. I was told that if you look just above everyone's head then it'll take away from the nervousness. I was wondering if that's a good thing to do or does it just look like you're looking above everyone's heads?
ReplyDeleteHi Ter,
ReplyDeleteI can't thank you enough for you positive teaching of this class. I was really skeptical of taking an oral Communications Class online but yours has been great. I've have learned so much, it's hard to know where to start. It has particularly helped with my sermon preperation. Just knowing about how to overcome the fear of public speaking and that we are all public speakers was helpful and how to use your voice and body to express important points has and will continue to help also. I will continue not only in church but at my job and preparing for a future job in the medical insurance field. Thanks again. Diane B. DBU Oral Communications Class.
The articles on the blog have helped me to become more confident when I speak and more knowledgeable about the concept of public speaking. I will continue to present in front of people, but work on getting more comfortable in front of people.
ReplyDeleteTer,
ReplyDeleteYour articles have taught me to become a better not just speaker but a better communicator. You have taught me to be patient with myself and to reach for whatever it is that I'm trying to achieve in my speaking. Being a good listener is just as important to being a good "talker" and the tow make you good in communicating. I thank you for all you have done to help me to become successful in my future in more ways than I can express!
After having thought about it, I do agree that we are all public speakers. I suppose I talk to people every day, but I think that talking in front of a group of people can be very intimidating and scary to those that are not used to it. It is definately something to get used to. I hope to do a better job in this area.

Ter,
ReplyDeleteYour class has taught me a lot about commuicating with other people and about giving speechs, The skills of listening is something I will use the rest of my life, now I'm more aware of the need to be a good listener. The public speaking skills I learned have helped me be a more relaxed speaker, I've learned that I have to know my material and practice it before I give a speech, I have learned so much in this class that I will use through out my career in medical billing. Thank You
I have learned some interesting tips from the blogs. Also some of it refreshed my memory from prior speaking classes.
ReplyDeleteI have learned quite a bit from your class at first I was a little unsure of this class and what it entailed but as the weeks went by I really found myself enjoying it, learning about how to improve myself in not only listening to what a person is really saying but how to give a speech.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I will ever do any public speeches in my career, which is in the Medical Coding & Billing field but I do know that I will have to listen and take accurate information down from what I hear and see. So in order for me to do that I really needed this class to help me understand all the ways to listen and reply to people in a correct manner. I feel that when I talk to people now I am not as impatient as I used to be and have really started to observe not only what they are saying to me but also paying attention more to their nonverbal gestures.
Thank you for a wonderful experience and my first introduction into blogging, as this was something I had never done before and was also extremely nervous about but then found out it was not so bad after all. It was fun to read all the different blogs and give feedback to them and I have learned all kinds of interesting things that I will definitely be applying to my everyday use.
Ter,
ReplyDeleteI have learned a lot in this class by reading your blogs. What I found most helpful was making your speech most memorable and ways to extinguish your fears. Using all these techniques I have learned made me a better speaker. I will continue to use the techniques, even in everyday speaking. I'm sure it will lead to success in my life and career.
Thank you!
Reading all these blogs on speeches have been really helpful and i will use them and go back to them everytime I need to give a speech. I will also practice them over and over till i feel confident enough to deliver a great speech. Blogs like yours can only help so i think its great that you even have them.
ReplyDeleteTer, I enjoyed the Public Speaking and I know the new acquired tools will help me in all areas of my communications. I have learned a great deal, but more important learned about life and how you must have great communication skills to achieve goals. If I could say the one skill I will continue to work on is in my Public Speaking. This has truely been a once in a lifetime class for the challenges and what was accomplished. Thank you again Ter.
ReplyDeleteTer,
ReplyDeleteYour class was very interesting and I learned alot. When ever I was stuck for an idea or topic to speak I would remember what you wrote, "just do it", and it helped. The different blogs with all the techniques and tips on how to give a good speech helped. Gave me confidence with the tip that my audience didn't have a script of my speech, so they didn't know if I goofed or not. Similar to picturing the audience naked. I enjoyed the class discussions and how to write a correct e-mail. I also, enjoyed the daily e-mails from you as an instructor, it made it feel like I was in a classroom and connected. I am sure I will carry my lessons of communication through out my life and career. Thank you!
I have learned different ways of listening and speaking in this class. This class has been a good learning experience and I am glad I took it. Thank you for all your words of encouragement and helpful ideas!
ReplyDeleteThe "10 Knows to Extinguish Fear" provided a speaking breakthrough for me in that it made me feel I had concrete steps to take to feel prepared and reduce anxiety in speaking. I like the concept of being as prepared as you can and then "just do it". This has become a life philosophy for me beyond preparing for a speech.
ReplyDeleteI also found a lot of useful information in the article, "Public Speaking Skills, Important or Essential". To that question I would answer: "essential". The more I learn about public speaking and oral communication, the more I am convinced that good speaking skills are very important in all aspects of life from family relationships to getting and doing well at a job.
The biggest eye opener in this class was how little we listen to each other in conversation. I was rather disgusted with myself when I paid attention to how many times I interrupt a person or can't wait to tell my story before the other person is even finished speaking. This is rude to the other person but I also miss out on the complete conversation. I plan to maintain awareness of good listening skills well beyond this class and hopefully, permanently change a bad habit.
I think that all the blog offered new ideas and ways to do it, to test out a few until you find one that works for you that you may have not thought of before. In future careers knowing this various things and ways that can be used in any situation. Just always remember to have eye contact and actually know you speech so your not saying like or um all the time!
ReplyDeleteI found that I enjoyed this class more than I thought I would. I have never liked any class that I have taken in the past that required me to stand in front of people regardless of who they are and deliver speeches. I must say that your encouraging words and ideas made this a lot easier and more interesting and fun to do. Thease articles also helped alot and gave very good tips and tricks for presenting in front of people. Many of them are invaluable. I think that if I have to talk in front of people again in the future, I will definitely use the word visualizations to draw them in. I also found that for me the story telling intros really worked for me with all of my audiences. The biggest thing I think I will remember and use is the fact that my speeches are not scripted and I can make changes on the fly if necessary without any one being the wiser. There are so many more things that I learned in this class that were very eye opening and enlightening, they are to many to list and talk about. In order to do that, I would almost have to write my own article. Thank you very much for everything you taught me and for your encouragement and guidance, it was greatly appreciated.
ReplyDeleteTer,
